How long have you been practicing Bikram Yoga?

Growing up I knew that there would be significant events in my life that I would never forget, and February 28, 2010 was definitely one of those days.  It was really the first time I smiled the entire 90 minutes of class.  Yes, February 28th was the last day of my 60-day challenge!  What started as a couple of classes in a row, led to a 60-day calendar on the wall.  But it all started in September 2009 when I bought a few 10-class cards.

What was your life/body like before you started practicing Bikram Yoga?

I've always enjoyed running, mountain biking, and sprint triathlons.  I was the guy you would see running in 100 degree temperature (and yes I know that's crazy)!  Nevertheless, all of the running and biking still did not prepare me for my first, second, or third Bikram Yoga class.

What motivated you to take your first class?

My girlfriend ~ now wife, Margaret, and her brother, Jude, began taking Bikram at the beginning of September 2009.  I would see both after class, and they were a mess.  Each would tell me about different challenging poses in the class.  Like I said, I was pretty active before I began Bikram, so I felt these guys had no idea what a challenging workout consisted of.  So at the end of September, I decided to join Margaret and Jude for my first class.  By the end of the class, I'm pretty sure I, too, looked like a mess.  But for some reason Bikram clicked.  Margaret and I started and completed our 60-day challenge together!

How often do you practice?

My goal is to practice Bikram every other day.  Every now and again I string together 2 or 3 classes in a row, but every other day seems to be a good balance between my professional life and my personal life.

How has your life/body changed since you started practicing?

Physically and mentally I feel great.  Bikram has increased the range of motion in my left arm and both my knees.  In the past, I would usually catch a cold or get a sinus infection 3-4 time per year.  Now, I rarely have any sick days.  I may step on a scale from time to time, but I don't worry about what it says.  Bikram has given me the confidence to know that my body is healthy and my mind is clear.

Is there anything else?

For those of you who have not completed a 60-day challenge, you owe it to yourself to find the time and dedication to take the challenge.  It's not easy...after all, it's 5,400 minutes of Bikram.  However, the pride and sense of accomplishment you feel each day you put up a star will carry you through the good days and the bad.  Go for it!  Namaste...
